If your MINI has 90K+ miles and you are starting to hear some clanking noises, loose steering and think you are due for some new shocks and springs, etc, now is the time to also replace the upper shock mounts or upper strut bearings as some people call them. Over time they simply fall apart and the result is the front end feels a bit 'loose' and may clank when going over uneven roads. Of course, the first thing to check would be the control arm bushings as they are prone to fall apart as early as 40K miles.
