Automatic Transmission Filter, 5 quarts of oil, fresh gasket, and a fresh drain plug crush washer for the Aisin automatic transmission (only used in the models listed below). Basically this is the gen1 automatic transmission that was used on all R52 and R53 'S' models. This is NOT for the CVT transmission which was used on the base Cooper models.

This kit includes enough fluid needed to fill and drain the oil from the transmission oil pan 2 times. Ideally you would drain the pan, remove it, put in the new gasket, refill it and then drive for a few days and then drain and refill again.

Each time you should get about 2.5 quarts of old oil and when you replace it with the fresh oil it will slowly blend with the old oil. Each time you drain and re fill it will slowly more of the old fluid because a good amount of the oil will be in the torque converter. Be on the lookout for the first 1-2 oil changes to slowly change from muddy brown to a brighter red each time you drain and refill. Ideally you can do this at least 2 times but you may opt to buy more oil (2.5 quarter per drain sequence) and do 4 complete changes.

While there are other potential problems related to shifting such as hard down shifts, random gear slips, and other issues (which are likely solenoid issues in the valve body), doing a fluid change (or ideally at least 3 in a few week range) SHOULD freshen up your MINI Cooper Aisin Automatic transmission to the point where you get cleaner shifts. If after doing this repetitive drain and fill procedure and you still have shifting issues it's then time to move on to replacing the solenoids in the valve body OR by replacing the valve body with a rebuilt unit from Revmax, etc. If that does not solve jerky, rough shifting issues your transmission is likely going to need a rebuild or replacement. In this case the cost to do so will likely be more than the value of a R53 or R52 model in 2021 so this is a great place to start!
